Probably our most popular PetCross®. The 2x6 Unfinished Cross is our lightest-weight cross, and our least expensive.
Like all our unfinished crosses, it’s also unprotected from the elements since it’s not pressure treated and has no coating such as CopperCoat™, spar urethane, or even paint.
This opens the door for you to “finish” an unfinished cross however you would like.
We advise dipping in CopperCoat™.
CopperCoat is a Rustoleum® product that’s specially formulated to protect wood destined for in-ground placement. Fence posts and railings treated with CopperCoat are still in service with no apparent damage even after 10 years. And longer.
A word about shipping costs: Weight. For now, shipping costs are the most uncontrollable expense on the PetCross® Store. The PetCross is available in 3 sizes, and obviously the larger the cross, the greater the weight.
The raw materials for unfinished products originate from lumber mills and fresh-cut trees, which can still hold a considerable amount of water content.
Pressure—Treated products come with added weight from the pressure treatment, sometimes nearly double the weight of an unfinished cross.
A spar-urethaned PetCross may not weigh as much as a pressure-treated equivalent, but there is a substantial labor cost to create the three coats.
The cellular content of wood also determines weight.
The greater the material content of wood, the greater is the weight of the wood. The greater the weight of the wood, the greater is the shipping cost. That’s just how it works.

CopperCoat™ is a Rustoleum® branded wood preservative product specially made to protect wood that’s in direct contact with the ground.
It’s difficult and expensive for individuals to buy. It’s not found on the shelves of many retailers. For example, though Home Depot sells CopperCoat, it’s available online-only—but with a minimum purchase requirement of 4 gallons, which costs around $75.
That’s impractical for you, but not for us.
CopperCoat can protect for years. Maybe even 20 years. Or longer.
It’s unknown just how much longer a CopperCoat will extend the life of your PetCross®, but previous in-ground placements of wood posts and fencing are still in service going on 22 years. Click here to read a review/testimonial at HomeDepot.com.

Another favorite. Cut from 2x6 Pressure-Treated lumber. The 2x6 Pressure-Treated PetCross® is our heaviest-weight 2x6 cross.
Here’s why. The protective chemical used to treat the wood adds permanent weight since it’s embedded into the cells of the wood.
It can still be painted (after priming) or given some other finish, like a stain. If you choose to apply a finish, it’s always a good idea to first let the wood spend some more time drying before applying the finish.
The less moisture content in the wood, the stronger your final finish will adhere to the wood.
That’s why we can’t offer a Spar-Urethaned finish on any Pressure-Treated PetCross®. Spar-Urethane is a varnish and requires a minimum amount of wood dryness for good adhesion. The pressure treatment is a near-saturation that prevents the level of adhesion we think a quality Spar-Urethane finish requires.
A disclaimer: The Pressure-Treatment chemical is safe, but the wood is not rated for in-ground use. Go figure.
The best workaround: Get a dip of CopperCoat™.
It might seem excessive, but many pressure-treated fence posts are first dipped in CopperCoat so we’re offering it too.
For now, shipping costs are the most uncontrollable expense on the PetCross® Store. We make them available in 3 sizes, and obviously the larger the cross, the greater the weight.

Three coats of spar-urethane on unfinished wood creates a PetCross® designed to withstand the elements.
Spar-urethane is great stuff, but it takes an investment of money, time, and labor work to create its extraordinarily beautiful finish.
This exterior-grade varnish soaks into wood and highlights wood’s natural pigments to create a protective amber sheen that can last for years.
It’s often used on boats to protect wood from water, sunlight, heat, cold, and whatever destructive elements are left after that.
To create maximum protection we like to put on three coats, but the cross must be sanded between each coat.
And it has to be sanded even before the first coat. So that’s three sandings and three coats. That’s some time, and that’s some labor, and that’s why a Spar-Urethaned PetCross® is our most expensive product.
Our most-premium product is a Spar-Urethaned PetCross® first dipped in CopperCoat™. While 3 coats of spar-urethane will look beautiful above ground, below ground urethane can’t last forever. It will eventually separate from wood, leaving the underlying material vulnerable, unless it was first dipped in CopperCoat™.

CopperCoat Preservative
A PetCross® dipped in CopperCoat™ protects against decay, rot, termites, and water damage. $10.
While a fence post isn’t a PetCross®, it’s similar. The success of Cuprinol/CopperCoated fence posts makes us recommend a CopperCoat™ dip for every PetCross®.
CopperCoat™ is made by Rust-Oleum® Wolman™ WOODLIFE® and will protect and preserve below-ground outdoor wood. Its unique formula contains an insecticide and nearly doubles the fungicide of standard sealers or stains. Plus it’s paintable and stainable.
Specifically, CopperCoat™is an EPA-registered, insecticidal preservative that prohibits termite damage, rot, and decay. It Inhibits surface growth of fungal organisms including mold, mildew and staining fungi.
What’s better than that?
Once dried, a PetCross® dipped in CopperCoat™ is paintable and stainable, though it will have a transparent green color but even that naturally fades over time.
The pressure-treated PetCross® can also be dipped. Ditto on everything above for Pressure-Treated PetCrosses® too.
A word about shipping costs: Weight.
The greater the substance content held in wood, the greater is the weight of the wood. That works for just-cut unfinished PetCrosses® with water content, Pressure-Treated PetCrosses®, and even 3-coated, Spar-Urethaned PetCrosses®.
Of course a dip in CopperCoat™ also adds content, on average at least a half pound to the total shipping weight.
The greater the weight of the wood, the greater is the shipping cost. That’s just how it works.
